Prairie Health & Wellness, a new direct-care practice, opens in Wichita

Digital Editor-Wichita Business Journal

The latest family medicine practice to begin seeing patients in Wichita is unusual in two ways, says family physician Dr. Jeffrey Davis.

First, it’s a direct-care practice, taking payment directly from patients instead of working with insurance companies. Second, it focuses on functional medicine, which means spending more time with patients and taking into account various aspects of wellness, such as nutrition and sleep.

Davis and nurse practitioner Joleen Zivnuska began seeing patients Wednesday at Prairie Health & Wellness, at 12115 E. 21st St., Suite 107.

The office used to house Prairie Gynecology, but Dr. Amy Short closed that practice in February. Davis says he and Short, a friend, share a similar philosophy on functional medicine, and he bought the facility from her when she left town. Davis used to practice at Primary Care Associates.

In a functional medicine approach, Davis says his focus is on prevention and finding the cause of a disease, rather than treating symptoms. In addition to traditional pharmaceuticals, Davis’ treatment may incorporate lifestyle changes, nutritional changes or supplements. He says he also considers balance, such as by prescribing probiotics to counter the negative effects of an antibiotic.

He may spend 45 minutes to an hour with a patient on a first visit, he says.

Under Prairie Health’s direct-care model, patients can pay a monthly membership fee or pay for individual services. Prairie provides a bill to patients that includes the diagnostic codes insurance companies need, so they could seek reimbursement from insurance on their own.
